How we respond to pressure affects how we behave, how we regulate, how we connect, and ultimately how we work together.
I have been a social worker for 30 years, including 23 years as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker and 21 years as a social work leader.
Over the years, I have led teams ranging from 20 to more than 100 staff and have experienced firsthand the complexity of leading people through change, uncertainty, conflict, and pressure.
My clinical work has also shaped how I understand people. For the past five years, I have continued to deepen my work as a Certified Clinical Trauma Professional. As a therapist, I have learned the importance of stabilization, regulation, and creating enough space for people to understand what is happening before deciding what to do next.
In 2020, just as the world was entering the pandemic, I became a Certified Facilitator of Difficult Conversations. The timing could not have been more appropriate. Suddenly, workplaces everywhere were having conversations they had never anticipated—about safety, uncertainty, loss, change, conflict, trust, and how we work together.
And the need for those conversations has not gone away.
What’s really happening when pressure rises?
When pressure rises, the Central Nervous System responds before we have time to think it through. Some people push harder. Some pull away. Some shut down. Some over-accommodate. Explore how pressure affects the way people think, feel, communicate, and respond—and how those responses shape work relationships, leadership, and performance at work.
Why is this happening?
Pressure doesn’t affect everyone the same way. The response we see may be shaped by individual patterns, past experiences, relationships, team dynamics, leadership practices, and the conditions people are working in. Understand helps organizations look beneath the behavior to identify the patterns driving disconnection, conflict, communication breakdowns, and performance challenges.
What could we do differently?
Knowing what is happening—and why—is not enough. People need opportunities to experience pressure, practice new responses, and build the capacity to choose differently in the moments that matter. Through immersive experiences, facilitated practice, and practical tools, Develop creates space for leaders and teams to test new ways of responding, regulating, communicating, and reconnecting.
At Work Talk Academy, We don't just teach people what to do differently. We put them in experiences where they can discover how they respond under pressure, practice regulating their response, and build the capacity to choose differently.
